The Railway Man

Sunday, 12 October 2014

I'm always up for a good war movie based on true events. The thing is, I had no idea that was what this movie was about. I just chose it to watch not really sure what to expect. Sometimes I venture into these movies that aren't really hyped about and I am either pleasantly surprised or I feel like I just wasted my time. Most of the time, the bigger blockbusters leave me with the latter.

IMDB Rates it 7/10 and I say I would give it at 10. I'm kind of like that though. I either love it, like it or I don't. It stars big names Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. It was also featured in the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.

The movie is about a british army officer who's brigade was taken captive by the Japanese to build a railroad from Thailand to Burma. It is a little slow to start, starting with the main character, Eric, meeting Patti on the train and then they end up getting married. It is a little slow to start but then we get into the meat of it. Patti realizes that Eric is suffering but he won't talk to her so she seeks answers from a friend of his. Then the movie starts into flashbacks revealing what happened. I don't want to reveal the rest but it is a must watch. It truly has a beautiful ending and I teared up a bit (Which, I never do by the way. I'm like a stone).

Another thing that I really love about this movie is that it tells a story that we never knew. There are so many things that happened during these times to all the countries involved and of course we mainly learned how it affected our own country. But then again, I am also fascinated with history and how things were.

I highly recommend giving this movie a watch. If you'd like, watch the trailer for it below.
